Drop-ins update

Across the last few weeks, the drop-in social events in Chichester and the newly created Bognor Regis addition have remained steady and well-attended, with each session reflecting the different needs of the people who take part. Some afternoons have been lively and bustling; others have been quieter, allowing more time for focused support.

We welcomed quite a few new families from Afghanistan and a couple of new Ukrainians. Many had limited English and were supported through short conversations, simple language practice and help navigating the space. A few former attendees, now well settled in the local community, returned to visit, which offered a sense of continuity for both newer guests and volunteers.

In Bognor Regis, we met several Unaccompanied Asylum-Seeking Children living in nearby supported accommodation. Their attendance is likely to increase over time, and some already participate in Nations United – It was encouraging to see them join games and activities alongside other attendees.

Children’s activities remained busy each week. Younger children spent long periods with Play-Doh, puzzles and painting, while older children joined group games or sat with adults at craft tables. Volunteers introduced a range of materials, and the resulting artwork was varied and expressive.

Craft and textile work also played a strong role among adults, particularly women. Sewing, knitting and crochet continued throughout the weeks, with some participants bringing finished pieces to show the group. These activities helped create consistent points of connection, especially for those still developing confidence in spoken English.

As attendance shifts and new groups join us, the sessions will continue to adapt to ensure everyone feels they have a place.
