A plan to ensure the continued achievement of our mission.

Our Mission

Is to relieve poverty and suffering among refugees and asylum seekers in Chichester and the surrounding area, in particular but not exclusively by providing practical, social and pastoral support to refugees and asylum seekers.

Our Strategic Aims

  • That our beneficiaries feel welcome and safe in their new, adopted community.
  • That our beneficiaries develop lives independent of state and charitable support as far as is possible.

The Journey

Every refugee we meet is on their own journey that started when they were forced to leave their home and seek asylum here in the UK.

That journey continues after they arrive in our area as they settle and develop their lives in their new, adopted community.

The charity aims to help every individual beneficiary, from arrival in our local area to independence, through four stages of their journey:

Arrival and welcome – all newly registered beneficiaries are helped to feel welcome, their immediate needs are identified and a plan for their future is outlined.

Settling in – as far as possible for asylum seekers and all other refugees with leave to remain, a Pathways to Independence plan (PTI) is constructed and specific support, signposting and advice is provided to support each plan.

Consolidation –  progress along the PTI plan is monitored and adjusted as needed.

Independence –  progress along the PTI plan is judged to have been completed to an extent that Sanctuary in Chichester’s support is either no longer needed or reduced to a minimum.

Sanctuary in Chichester 2026 – 2028

To ensure the continued achievement of our mission, Sanctuary in Chichester’s two-year strategy is based on three key objectives:

1. The Journey

By the end of 2028, we will establish and embed a co-created Pathway to Independence for all interested adult beneficiaries; identifying and delivering the support required to achieve milestone goals on their journey to lives that are independent of state and charitable support to the extent that this is possible.

2. Financial sustainability

We will develop and maintain a fundraising strategy that allows us to raise sufficient revenue to meet at least 12 months’ forecast commitments of our operating costs, to maintain our workforce and to ensure continued beneficiary support.

The plan must also include diverse funding streams and be flexible, to ensure the charity does not become over-reliant on any one funding source.

3. Nurturing our workforce

In 2026, to align the skills, qualifications and experience of our workforce to the growing demand:

  • We will strengthen our volunteer management and coordination.
  • We will strengthen collaborative working and partnerships with other local charities, churches and community organisations upon whom our success relies.
