Video: testimony from refugee on the value of volunteering

Kerry Foster, Pathways to Independence Manager recently gave a presentation and information session for volunteer managers and coordinators from a number of local organisations, brought together by Voluntary Action Arun and Chichester (VAAC). Kerry shared insights she’s gained so far about how to overcome barriers to recruitment of refugees and asylum seekers, which received positive feedback from attendees

A powerful and heartwarming moment was a testimony from Shitou, a hotel resident, who Kerry explains, “I first met at one of the employment workshops I delivered at the hotel and he has since taken up all opportunities offered, volunteering at three of the organisations we are working closely with.”

Shitou wrote his testimony himself without any guidance and it was received extremely well by all and earned him a very loud applause.  “What I thought was further heartwarming was when he said he was ‘from Sanctuary in Chichester’. I think this speaks volumes“, says Kerry.
