Fundraiser in memory of Gill Casey

Good luck to Ben, Ellie and Jon Casey, who are running the Great South Run in memory of their mum and our much-missed friend, Gill Casey:

We’re running the Great South Run on 17 October 2021, along with family and friends, in memory of our beloved Mum, Gillian Casey, and to raise money for two charities; Brake and Sanctuary in Chichester.

Mum dedicated her life to her family and to the countless children she taught as a primary school teacher. In retirement, she worked tirelessly on behalf of others less fortunate than herself in various voluntary and fundraising roles. This included supporting local refugee families via the work of Sanctuary in Chichester. As the former chair of the charity said, “Gill became a pillar of Sanctuary – and a kind of sanctuary in her own right: families and individuals felt safe with her”.

Mum was killed in a car crash on 27 February 2020. The crash also killed another woman and seriously injured a third. The driver who caused the crash was significantly over the drink drive limit and was driving at around 100mph on an unlit road. He was convicted of death by dangerous driving and was sentenced to 8.5 years in prison. He is likely to be released on licence after serving just four years.

We have chosen to raise money for Brake, the road safety charity, because of its crucial work campaigning for safer roads and supporting people bereaved and injured by road crashes. Brake also campaigns to increase the sentencing powers available to Judges for such offences.

We are also raising money for Sanctuary in Chichester to create a legacy for Mum’s voluntary work. Sanctuary supports newly arrived refugees and asylum seeking families to avoid destitution. It also supports social activities and integration, so that such families are able to contribute to their communities.
